GERALDO’S GOT A GUN

December 4, 2001 — GERALDO Rivera, reporting for Fox News
Channel in Afghanistan, says he’s packing a gun – which he
will use to defend himself, if necessary, from hostile Taliban killers.

“If they’re going to get us, it’s going to be in a gun fight,” Rivera told
FNC anchor Laurie Dhue from the village of Taloqan.

“It’s not going to be a murder. It’s not going to be a
crime. It’s going to be a gun fight.

“My brother, (producer) Craig and I . . . we refuse to be
crime victims. We’re not the victim types,” Rivera said.

Eight journalists have been murdered in Afghanistan since
Operation Enduring Freedom began in late September. The
last reporter killed was a Swedish cameraman murdered in an
apparent robbery in Taloqan.

Most news organizations, such as FNC, have kept their
correspondents in the region – but have advised them to use
extreme caution when dealing with a country in total chaos
and killers who have no value for human life.

“OK, now we know that you’re traveling with bodyguards . . .
but what about a gun?” Dhue asked Rivera. “We’re hearing
reports that some reporters are carrying them. Are you
carrying one and do you think you should?”

“I don’t think you would blame me, would you, Laurie?”
Rivera said.

“Does that mean you’re carrying a gun?” Dhue asked.

“. . . Do you really want me to answer?” Rivera replied.

“Well, if you think it’s going to jeopardize your safety,
then don’t,” Dhue responded.

“Well, I’ll nod,” Rivera replied, nodding his head to
indicate that, “yes,” he is carrying a gun.

“All right – we have our answer,” said Dhue.

It’s not known what kind of gun Rivera is carrying, or how
or where he came into ownership of the weapon.

Rivera shipped out to Afghanistan with his brother Craig and
cameraman Paul Butler last month shortly after bolting CNBC
for top-rated Fox News Channel.

“We’re all in pretty good spirits,” Rivera told Dhue.
“We’ve been in various conflicts, and we keep our chin up
and keep focused on the fact that we want Osama bin Laden to
end up either behind bars or six feet under or maybe just
one foot under – or maybe as just a pile of ash.

“That’s it.”
